Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball defeats the Gwinn Modeltowners 51-45 on Sunny 101.9FM

Negaunee, MI February 1st, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team returned to the court after a full week off, to host the Gwinn Modeltowners! Jesse Anderson had the call from Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium on Sunny 101.9FM!

1st Half:

Gwinn started out fast, as they led 5-0 in the first minute of the game. Both teams would have multiple possessions without scoring, there was a lull in the scoring column. The Miners would make a three-pointer for there first points of the game, cutting the Modeltowners’ lead to 6-3. Gwinn would extend their lead up to 8-3, and neither team would score for a couple minutes. The Miners went on a quick four point run with under two minutes remaining in the quarter, and they trailed 8-7. Negaunee kept up their full court pressure, but Gwinn handled it well and scored a basket. The Miners would score four late points to end the quarter, and they led 11-10 after the first quarter.

Both teams would start the quarter slow, as the Miners led 14-12 with five minutes to go in the second. This game was a battle, as the Miners led 18-14 with three minutes to go in the half. Both teams would trade baskets, and Negaunee led 21-16. Good defense was being played by both squads, with hustle being displayed. Scoring was limited in the last couple minutes, but at the halftime buzzer, Gwinn would hit a half-court shot. Negaunee led Gwinn 23-19 at the halftime break.

2nd Half:

Both teams traded baskets quickly, as the Miners led 25-21. Gwinn was doing an impressive job handling Negaunee’s press, which caused problems for them in the first matchup. Both teams were held scoreless once again for a couple minutes, until an and-one by Gwinn cut Negaunee’s lead to just one. Both teams would trade baskets, and there was a tied game in Negaunee, the score being 28-28. Both teams were trading baskets left and right, as the Miners held on to a 32-31 advantage, a great game was being played. With just over a minute remaining in the third quarter, Negaunee went on a run and took a six point lead over Gwinn. No more points were scored by either team in the last minute of the third quarter, and the Miners led the Modeltowners 37-31 with one quarter to go.

End of 3rd: Negaunee Miners 37, Gwinn Modeltowners 31

Both teams were trading baskets once again, and the Miners led 43-35 with six minutes remaining. The action was intense, and both teams were giving it their all on both ends. Negaunee led 45-40 with three minutes to go, this one was setting up for a great finish. Both teams stepped it up on defense, as once again for a couple minutes, the teams combined for zero points. The Miners would hit two free throws to extend their lead to seven with a minute to go. Both teams would trade baskets, and Negaunee led 49-42 with under 30 seconds remaining. Gwinn would hit a three to cut the lead to just four, they were making things interesting, but they ran out of time. Negaunee iced Gwinn with free throws, and the Miners walked out with a 51-45 win over the Modeltowners.
