Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball Holds Off the Gwinn Modeltowners 50-40 on Sunny 101.9FM

Gwinn, MIJanuary 15th, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball returned to the court on Tuesday, hoping to avenge their first loss the of the season. It was their first match-up of the year against a familiar foe in the Gwinn Modeltowners. Jesse Anderson was live from Gwinn to give you all of the exciting action on Sunny 101.9FM.

1st Half:

The battle of 7-1 Marquette County teams started off slow-paced, the Miners led 3-1 with two minutes gone in the first quarter. Negaunee’s full court pressure caused problems for the Modeltowners, as they were playing excellent defense. The Miners jumped out quickly to a 12-1 lead, which forced a Gwinn timeout. Negaunee would hold Gwinn to only a free throw in the first quarter, as the Miners led 16-1 after the first quarter of play.

End of 1st: Negaunee Miners 16, Gwinn Modeltowners 1

The Miners started off the second quarter strong, as a three-pointer extended the lead to 18 points. Gwinn would cut into the lead with three more free throws, making the score 19-4 in favor of Negaunee. Halfway through the second quarter, Gwinn made their first field goal of the game, a true testament of Negaunee’s tremendous defense. The Miners would respond quickly, as they scored four points to bring their lead up to 23-6. The defense was great on both sides to end the half, as no more points were scored for the rest of the second quarter. Negaunee would take a 23-6 lead into the locker room over the Gwinn Modeltowners.

2nd Half:

Negaunee struck quickly once again to begin the second half, as with two minutes gone by in the third quarter, the Miners took a 29-8 lead. Gwinn would make things interesting fast, as they went on an incredible 14-0 run to cut the lead to just nine points. Negaunee suddenly found themselves in a tough game, as the Modeltowners showed true grit getting back into it. After a 23 point third quarter, Gwinn only found themselves trailing by six points heading into the fourth quarter.

End of 3rd: Negaunee Miners 35, Gwinn Modeltowners 29

Both teams would trade a free throw to begin the final quarter of play, as the Negaunee lead would stay at only six with seven minutes remaining in the game. Both squads picked it up on the defensive end once again, and with only four minutes remaining in the game, the Miners led by eights points off of two free throws. Negaunee would capitalize on a fast break, and extended their lead back up to 11 points. The game would become very slow-paced, as the Miners were simply just trying to run out the clock. Negaunee was in the double bonus early in the quarter, so a lot of free throws came their way in the last few minutes. The Miners were struggling from the free throw line, they couldn’t quite put away the Modeltowners. Gwinn had a strong comeback to get back in the game, but they ran out of time. Negaunee iced the game away with free throws, as they walked out of Gwinn with a 50-40 win.
