Negaunee, Michigan– 01/30/2018– The Negaunee Miners Girls High School basketball team stayed home to take on the Gladstone Braves this Tuesday night. The Miners came into this game a perfect 12-0 while the Braves had a 7-5. The Miners are now #4 in the Michigan polls and #2 in the UPSSA, behind St. Ignace. The Braves won the tip-off to begin the game. The ball bounced around the two teams a couple of times until McKenzie Karki scored the first two points of the night for Negaunee. Defensively, the Miners started off right away having a great game and they were playing well together. 20-8 was the score at the end of one. Clara Johnson scored the first two points in the second quarter for Negaunee. Natalie Bartle pepped up and strengthened the lead for the Miners as she scored 12 points in the second quarter. Both teams went into the double bonus towards the end of the half. 40-21 was the score at the half as the Miners held the huge lead over the Braves. Taylor Hunter had 21 points and led the scorers for the Braves in the first half. Natalie Bartle led all of the scorers with 23 points for the Miners.
Negaunee had possession to start off the second half of the ball game. The Miners played really well and they were really moving the ball around during the whole game. McKenzie Karki really shown in this quarter as she scored a for the Miners. Abby Nelson also made an appearance for the Miners, scoring two points. At the end of three, the Miners led the Braves 53-31. The Braves came answered back in the fourth quarter as Megan Crow fired off shot after shot. Jesse had mentioned that the Miners were playing relaxed and executed very well both offensively and defensively. The flow of the game seemed a lot smoother for the girls this Tuesday night. Lynsee Dempsey, Mykenna Kontio, and Hannah Voskuhl all scored for the Miners in the fourth. 66-42 was the final score with the Miners keeping their undefeated title and advancing to 13-0 for the season. Overall, this game was one of the girl’s best. Megan Crow led the Braves with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 block. Taylor Hunter followed behind her with 9 points, and 5 rebounds. Natalie Bartle led the Miners and all scorers with 27 points, 6 rebounds, 9 steals, 1 block, and 5 assists. Clara Johnson followed behind her with 15 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, and 1 assist. McKenzie Karki had 10 points, 1 rebound and 3 steals for the Miners. Megan Syrjala had 3 points and 1 rebound. Hannah Voskuhl, Mykenna Kontio, Abby Nelson (Abby also had 5 rebounds and 2 steals), and Lynsee Dempsey all had 2 points for the game for the Miners.

The next Girls game will be this Friday, February 2nd, as they stay home to also take on the Gwinn ModelTowners.
