A Negaunee Miner gets a free-throw looking to take back the lead from the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils.

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan01/12/2018– The Negaunee Miners Boys High School Basketball team traveled to Sault Ste. Marie this Friday night to take on the Blue Devils. The Miners came into this game 4-5 and the Blue Devils were 1-3. Brady Guilbault brought you all of the action on Sunny FM.

The Blue Devils won the tip-off and by the time the Miners scored their first two points, Sault Ste. Marie was ahead by five. At the last few seconds of the first quarter, Jackson Sager took a nice three pointer and brought the score to 15-11 with the Miners trailing only by four. By half-time the Blue Devils, Brandon Paul (14 points) and Shane Thompson (10 points) had scored the most for their team and were players to look out for on the Miners end. Jason Waterman (6 points) and Luke Skewis (5 points) both scored the most points for the Miners. 29-20 was the score at the end of the first half with the Miners trailing the Blue Devils.

Starting off the second half of the game, Luke Skewis for the Miners swooshed both of his free-throws to close the Blue Devils lead to 7 points. At one point, the Miner Jason Waterman scored to bring the game back down to a five point game. 42-37 was the score at the end of three. In the fourth, Jacob Ennett, of Negaunee, scored and brought the score to 45-44. Towards the end of the fourth quarter, both teams finished up the game with a surplus of free-throws.

For the Blue Devils, Brandon Paul had a good game with 32 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal and 2 blocks. Coming in second with points for the Blue Devils was Mathew Knowles with 10 points, 1 board, and 1 assist. For the Miners, Jason Waterman scored 20 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist. Luke Skewis had a good game for the Miners as well with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. 58-53 was the final score of the the game with the Miners falling to the Blue Devils. Coach had said that the Negaunee boys are really close to being really good but they just need to play as hard as he knows they can so they can improve.

*The next Miners game will be next week, Tuesday, January 16th as the Girls Basketball team stays home to take on the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils. The pre-game will be around 6:30pm and tip-off at 7pm for the Girls’ game. The Boys will be playing next week, Thursday, January 18th as they travel to Gladstone to take on the Braves.
