Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball is defeated by Ishpeming Hematites (59-54) on Sunny FM

Negaunee, Michigan01/10/2018– The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team stayed home this Wednesday night to take on their cross-town rivals, the Ishpeming Hematites. The Miners came into this game 4-4 while the Hematites were 2-2. Jesse Anderson and Brady Guilbault brought you all of this game’s play-by-play action on Sunny FM.

This was a big game for the Miners as they took on their rivals, the Ishpeming Hematites. Before the game started, the student section filled up to show support for both of the teams. The tip-off was won by Ishpeming quite easily, as they are slightly taller than the Miners team, but the Miners did not falter and put up a great defense. Jason Waterman, of Negaunee, scored the first two points of the game. Ishpeming had a lot of momentum on their side in the first quarter as they pulled ahead on the scoreboard but Negaunee pushed back with a big run to close the gap. Jason Waterman shot in the last few seconds to tie the game 13 all at the end of one. The Hematites kept the ball and took back the lead in the beginning of the second quarter. Drew DuShane, of Negaunee, did a really great job with defense containing the star player of Ishpeming. There were a couple three point plays from the Hematites but the Miners answered right back with three point plays of their own. After a quick and exciting first half, the score was 35-26 with the Miners trailing.

The Hematites started off the second half with possession of the ball but it was quickly rebounded by Luke Skewis, of Negaunee, to make it Miners ball. Dondre Yohe, of Ishpeming, and Hart Holmgren, also of Ishpeming, were the two players to look out for in the Hematites. 48-31 was the score at the end of three with the Miners trailing the Hematites. Negaunee started to battle back more in the fourth quarter. Jason Waterman, Drew DuShane, and Luke Mattson scored the first ten points of the fourth quarter for the Miners. Ishpeming had to take a time-out to re-evaluate the Miner’s bounce-back in play. After a couple three pointers by Ishpeming, answered back with more three pointers of their own from Negaunee, the final score of the game was a close 59-54 with the Miners taking the loss to the Hematites. It was a hard fought game by both of the teams. The Miners really showed that they have a lot of potential after playing the skilled Ishpeming team. The Miners are now 4-5 for the season.
