First Round of Negaunee Miner Playoff Football from Miners Stadium on Sunny.FM – Miners (28) VS Charlevoix Rayders (7)

Negaunee, MichiganOctober 28th, 2016 – The drizzle certainly didn’t put a damper on this playoff game from Miners Stadium in Negaunee on Sunny.FM! Your Negaunee Miners were ready to take on the Charlevoix Rayders from Charlevoix, Michigan in the first round of playoff action. The victorious Miners were 9-0 on the season and the Rayders were 7-2 before the results of this game.

The Negaunee Miners kicked off to start the game, and the action started quickly. The Rayders were able to get into the end zone first, and after a good extra point kick, they led the Miners 0-7. Later in the quarter, Negaunee found their footing and made their first venture into the end zone on a nice run. After the good extra point attempt, the score was tied up at 7-7, and that’s how the quarter would end.

It was a very close game as the second quarter began with the Negaunee Miners tied with the Charlevoix Rayders 7-7. Just a few minutes into the second quarter, Negaunee was sitting within reach of the goal line, but the Charlevoix defense was giving them a run for their money. The Miners eventually fought through the line with a run from Neil Violetta, and put seven more points onto the scoreboard, making it 14-7. On the Rayders’ next drive, Negaunee forced a punt that was bobbled and then blocked, giving the Miners possession on the Rayders’ 26 yard line. However, they were unable to convert the turnover into any points. As the quarter wound down, the Rayders were dangerously close to evening the score up, as they drove to within the 25 yard line. Keeping the action going, the Miners intercepted a Charlevoix pass on their own two yard line, and prevented a possible score.

The second half started with the Negaunee Miners leading the Rayders, but it was a close game throughout the entire first half. Negaunee got the ball to start the quarter, and it was a long, slow drive that stalled out halfway down the field. Negaunee came up big on defense, forcing a turnover from the Rayders on their next drive. Eventually, Shane Ring made it into the end zone for another Miners’ touchdown, making the score 20-7 with just a few minutes left in the third quarter. Negaunee’s defense continued to play well, and they were able to hold off the Rayders before the end of the third quarter.

As the final quarter of the game began, the Negaunee Miners held the lead, but the Charlevoix Rayders were doing everything in their power to make a comeback as their playoff lives hung in the balance. The Rayders completed a long pass, which gave them great field position, early in the fourth quarter. However, the Miners quickly put a stop to the drive, and Negaunee was able to score another touchdown midway through the final quarter. It was an intense final quarter for the Rayders, but nothing they did was able to close the gap, and as the final quarter wound down, Negaunee took home the win to keep their playoff run going.
