Negaunee, MI – October 20th, 2016 – It was the last game of the regular season for the Negaunee Miners as they took on the Westwood Patriots at home. The Miners were able to win the opening coin toss, and they kicked off to the Patriots to start the game. Negaunee put the first points of the game on the scoreboard with a nice run through multiple defenders, and after the extra point, Negaunee led 7-0. The first quarter progressed quickly, and Negaunee was able to hold the lead as the Patriots controlled the ball going into the second quarter.
The Negaunee Miners held a one-score lead over Westwood going into the second quarter, but the Patriots were keeping the game close. It was a slow, steady drive for Westwood, but it ended when the Miners intercepted a short pass midway down the field. However, as the Miners drove toward the goal line, they fumbled near the endzone, relinquishing control of the ball back to Westwood with just under two minutes left in the half. It was another long, slow drive for the Patriots, but the Miners’ defense came up big and held them off until the first half ended.

The Negaunee Miners had a great start to the second half of play when they were able to return the kick to their own 43 yard line. Just a few minutes into the second half, Neal Violetta scored another Miners’ touchdown, and after another good extra point, the score was 14-0 in favor of Negaunee. After their touchdown, the Miners continued to play excellent football, holding off the Patriots’ offense in a convincing manner. On a huge 60 yard run, Brock Aho took home another touchdown, and it seemed that the Miners had gotten over their first-half jitters, making it 21-0. Both teams started getting jumpy as the game wound down, and both teams had to deal with multiple penalties late in the third.
As the final quarter began, the Negaunee Miners held a firm lead of 21-0 over the Patriots. With less than nine minutes left in the game, Shane Ring scored another touchdown on a quick run, making it 28-0. Westwood seemed to come alive as the clock wound down, surprising the Negaunee defensive line with several quick run plays. Negaunee was in control of the game from the opening kick off, and they cemented their undefeated season, taking home the win over the Westwood Patriots.
