02/17/15 Gladstone, Michigan – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team traveled to Gladstone, Michigan tonight, to face the Gladstone Braves.  Carl Leander Johnson, the voice of the Negaunee Miners and Jesse Anderson were there to bring you all the exciting action on Sunny.FM.

The Braves were first to score in the ball game after a 90-second possession.  Negaunee was quick to answer back with two quick baskets and took the lead 4-2.  Jay Lori showed he was going to have a good game early, as he got the ball down low and did some good damage, scoring seven points in the first.  Gladstone would hang around though, with senior big-man Andy Olesak doing some work for the Braves. Both teams played a great first quarter, but the Miners came out with the 12-10 lead going into the second.

Negaunee was slow to start the second quarter and only managed one point in the first two minutes.  Fortunately, the Miners defense was locked in and held a 13-12 lead when sophomore  Dre Tuominen drained a three-pointer for Negaunee to increase their lead to four with just over five minutes left in the half.  They maintained the lead throughout the second quarter, and pushed it to nine by the break, leading 26-17.

Gladstone was first to put points  on the board in the third quarter as point guard Tyler Wells started doing some good work en route to his 23-point performance.  Negaunee answered back when Dre Tuominen knocked down his second three-point shot of the night to give his team a 29-21 lead.  The Miners continued to maintain a good-sized lead throughout the third and led 33-23 with five minutes left in the quarter.  Gladstone would get some big shots from Wells, Olesak, and Joe Gibbs to cut the Miners’ lead down to just five going into the final frame, 38-33!

Rob Loy, Jay Lori, and Dre Tuominen weren’t feeling the “close-game feel” and put points on the board quickly in the fourth and locked down defensively.  All three would cross the double-digit plateau, with Lori leading the way, scoring 22.   Tyler Wells did everything he could to keep his team in the game, and brought the Braves within six, but it wasn’t meant to be when they hit foul trouble and the Miners were swooshing free-throw after free-throw.  The Miners continued to control the ballgame throughout the fourth quarter, and came out the victors 55-45 against the Gladstone Braves in a nice non-conference win.
