The Negaunee Miners hit the road as they look to pick up a non-conference win against the Gladstone Braves. Heather Seppanen has your call on Sunny 101.9 WKQS.

Gladstone, Michigan–  Gladstone scores first to take a 2-0 lead in the first minute of play. Ashley Veale drives for the Miners and gets fouled in her shot attempt. Veale sinks both shots from the charity strip to tie the game at 2-2. With 5:20 left in the first, the Miners trail 4-2. The Braves have jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. Kayla Hakala nails a 3-pointer to tie the game at 7-7. The  Miners jump ahead 11-9 with under two minutes in the first quarter; taking their first lead.

Final quarter:

Negaunee: 15         Gladstone: 12

The Miners get on the board first, taking a 17-12 lead. With 6:20 to play in the second quarter it’s a 17-16 Miner lead. Ashley Veale drives through the lane and scores to give Negaunee a 21-18 advantage. With two minutes left in the first half, the Miners have gone up by five, 25-20. Kayla Hakala connects on another 3-pointer as the Miners take a 28-23 lead with 30 seconds left.

Halftime score:

Negaunee: 28      Gladstone: 23

Gladstone strikes first in the second half, cutting the Miner lead to 28-25. The Braves have switched to a full court press in the early goings of the third quarter. With under six minutes left in the third quarter, the Braves have cut the Miner lead to one; 28-27. Gladstone captures their first lead since the first quarter as they pull ahead 29-28. With four minutes left in the third the Miners have jumped ahead of the Braves; 30-29. Kayla Hakala drains another 3-pointer for the Miners as they extend their lead 33-29. Leading 33-31, Negaunee calls a timeout to focus on their press break against the Braves. With 1:25 to play in the third the game is knotted at 33 apiece. The Braves hit one-of-two from the line to take a 34-33 lead with 30 seconds to play in the third quarter. Negaunee returns on the next possession, dropping a bucket while getting fouled, to take a 36-34 lead with 26 seconds to play in the third quarter.

Third quarter:

Negaunee: 36         Gladstone: 37

The Miners hit a pair from the line to start the fourth quarter and retake the lead, 38-37. Gladstone hits a free throw to tie the game at 38-38. With 5:08 left in the fourth, the Miners are clinging to a 40-39 lead. Kayla Hakala steps to the line and drops a pair as Negaunee goes ahead 42-39. Taylor Wilber hits a lay-up while getting fouled as she heads to the line in hopes to add to the Miner lead. After hitting the free throw the Miners have gone up 47-39. Rosalie Anderson hits a pair from the line to put the Miners back up by six, 49-43. Gladstone responds by hitting a 3-pointer and getting fouled. The Braves cut the Miner lead to two points, with two minutes to play. Rosalie Anderson hits two more from the line to push the Miner lead back to four points. With 34 seconds left the Miners take a timeout with a 51-47 lead. The Miners seal the game up at the free throw line.

The Miners use a strong fourth quarter and clutch shooting down the stretch to knock off the Braves. Negaunee improves to 14-3 on the season.

Negaunee: 53        Gladstone: 49
