Darlene Allen of League of Women Voters 8th Day Interview about the Observer Corps

Marquette, Michigan – Darlene Allen of the League of Women Voters talked with Todd Pazz this week about the new Observer Corps in Marquette County.

From the press release from the League, “The League of Women Voters of Delta County, Marquette County Unit is excited to announce the launching of its Observer Corps,” said David Allen of the Marquette Unit. “The Observer Corps gives League members an opportunity to attend governmental meetings, summarize proceedings, and report back to the League and community,”added Allen. League members will follow the Marquette County Board of Commissioners, the City of Marquette Commission, the Marquette Area Public Schools Board, the Marquette Board of Light and Power, and the township boards for Marquette and Chocolay Townships. We hope to recruit new League members in Negaunee, Ishpeming, Gwinn, and Northern Michigan University, who may be willing to observe additional city, school, and township boards throughout Marquette County.

The League attempts to be a source of consistent, unbiased information for communities on the proceedings of local government. Observing governmental processes and reporting about them in an unbiased manner helps to foster confidence in government by improving understanding of actions that are suggested or taken by its representatives, and by making elected and appointed officials aware that their actions are being thoughtfully scrutinized by the public. The Observer Corps works within laws that allow access to public records and to public meetings.

The Observer Corps is never a vehicle to pursue personal or partisan agendas. Observers generally do not “act”on issues in meetings or provide commentary or testimony on issues (unless also serving as a designated spokesperson for the League). Instead, observers attend meetings to gather information.

Anyone who wants to learn more about how governmental entities in Marquette County operate can join the League of Women Votersof Delta County, Marquette County Unit and be a part of our new Observer Corps.
