Upper Yooper Barbershop Chorus is always looking for new fans and new members.

Marquette, Michigan – Last week, 8th Day host Todd Pazz spoke with returning guest Upper Yooper Barbershop Chorus member Pete Stephens-Brown about upcoming barbershop performances in the U.P.

A barbershop chorus is much like a barbershop quartet except instead of 4 members each singing a tenor, bass, baritone and lead part, between 2 and 54 members sing the parts. Pete said the largest chorus he has seen was at the old Tiger’s stadium where several choruses came together with around 480 people to sing the National Anthem.

On Sept. 15, the group held their Second Guest Night in Marquette. The group set some serious goals, including gathering appreciation and membership outreach, but overall, the chorus just wanted to have fun through their silly contests. Participants battled to see who had the steadiest note, best howl, wildest yodel and best whale song.

Though these guys don’t wear the normal cane hat and striped shirt get-up you’d expect, some groups still do, including the Main Street Quartet, ranked third in the world for barbershop groups. Main Street will be performing at Escanaba Junior High School on Oct. 3. If you missed out on the Upper Yooper’s guest night in September, don’t worry because they will be heading to Escanaba to participate in the event and watch the featured guests.

Keep an eye out for future performances by the Upper Yooper Barbershop Chorus. They plan on putting together a Christmas arrangement in December and another show in April that could include a Wisconsin quartet.

The Upper Yoopers are always looking for new members. You can contact them through their Facebook page, email them at upperyoopers@gmail.com or call Pete at (906) 361-8308. Even if you don’t want to join but just enjoy their music, drop them a line.
