08/29/14 Manistique, Michigan– The Negaunee Miners kicked off the 2014 Football season in Manistique Michigan tonight against the Manistique Emeralds. Carl Leander Johnson the voice of the Negaunee Miners and his partner Jesse Anderson were there to bring you all the exciting action LIVE on Sunny.FM.
The Emeralds were the first to receive the ball, and had a good drive going, but the Miners stopped them at mid-field. After a short punt, senior Ryan Syrjala got to bring his offense out onto the field for the first time in 2014. Despite some occasional struggles on the offensive side of the ball, the Miners were able to march down the field. Senior fullback Zak Harsila carried the ball well for the Miners, along with junior running back Austin Johnson. The Miners’ first drive of the 2014 season was capped off by a nice option run by Ryan Syrjala who put the first points on the board of the season! Negaunee would end the quarter leading 7-0 in Manistique.
As it would go for the rest of the night, the Miners were able to stop the Emerald offense, this time on an interception by Jason Bell with just under seven minutes left in the second quarter. Negaunee was able to take advantage of the possession and Zak Harsila powered his way into the end zone to score their second touchdown of the game to lead 13-0. Throwing in another wrinkle for Negaunee was their kicking game, which looks very consistent and is going to be a big part of Negaunee football this season. Swedish foreign exchange student Paul Davison is playing his first ever football this year, and looks good doing it. With the PAT being good, the Miners led 14-0 against the Emeralds and would go into halfime with the score standing pat.
Both teams fought hard and the x’s & o’s in the huddle were definitely at work.
Negaunee received the ball to start the third quarter with a good return run in Manistique. Ryan Syrjala started the half off with a band and threw a great pass to Jason Bell for 40 yards and advanced to the Emerald 12 yard line with just under 11 minutes left in the quarter. Manistique’s defense was unable to hold Negaunee and the Miners scored their third touchdown of the game to lead 21-0 on a Ryan Bischoff touchdown run. The Emeralds continued to struggle against the Negaunee Miners defense, especially senior Cole Francis, who is a load at 6’2 255lbs, and was unable to muster any offense throughout the third quarter.
The fourth quarter began with Negaunee in Emerald territory, and the Miners were able to march down the field once again. Ryan Syrjala’s arm was on display all night long, but this drive was led by senior Ryan Bischoff & junior Austin Johnson. Once Negaunee got within the Emerald 10 yard line, a series of short runs led to another Ryan Syrjala touchdown, this time on a simple quarterback sneak. With another Davison extra point, the Miners took a commanding 28-0 lead with just under eight minutes left to go. The Negaunee defense refused to give up the shutout and the Miners went on to win this one by the impressive score of 28-0!
