Miner nation completed yet another successful week over the past four games.  Going a combined 3-1, the boys & girls are making that final push for an MPC title.  The girls played the first two of their three-game road trip with a loss at L’Anse on Tuesday followed by a win in Iron Mountain on Thursday.  Rosalie Anderson continued her leadership on the court by scoring double digits (12 & 10 respectively) in both contests.  While she struggled a bit on Tuesday, freshman point guard Aleda Johnson came out of her scoring slump in Iron Mountain to the tune of 15 points!  Courtney Finnila continued her impressive defensive abilities racking up seven more steals in two games.  Negaunee greatly benefits when Finnila, Hailee Richards, and Ashley Tresedder can all avoid foul trouble and stay in the game, because there is possibly no better trio of defenders in the MPC.  Negaunee’s defense is what’s kept them in most games this season, only allowing teams to break 40 points five times in the past eleven games.  And 50 in only two of those occasions!  The girls are going to beat you with a pretty offense, most nights they’re fortunate to break the 40% mark in shooting.  No, they go out and simply out-will the other team.  Good defense, good free-throw shooting, and hustle are the keys to the Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team.

This week will test the girl’s resolve once again as they have two huge MPC games on tap with a non-conference game in between:

  • Tuesday, 2/11 Negaunee @ Gwinn Modeltowners — 7:00 pregame followed by a 7:30 tip
  • Wednesday, 2/12 Negaunee vs. Gladstone Braves — 7:00 pregame followed by a 7:30 tip
  • Friday, 2/14 Negaunee vs. Westwood Patriots– 7:00 pregame followed by a 7:30 tip

For the boys, the city of Negaunee took on the city of Ishpeming and Negaunee came out victorious on both occasions.  In a long-range shooting match, the Miners defeated the Westwood Patriots 76-57 behind 17 points apiece from Zane Radloff & Eric Lori.  After one day’s rest, the Miners traveled to Ishpeming for a much anticipated date with the Hematites.  Negaunee had already defeated the Hematites earlier in the season 57-55 on an Eric Lori game-winning three pointer, and Ishpeming had revenge on their mind.  It wasn’t meant to be though, as the Miners do what Miners do:  Mine rocks.  Negaunee came out on top 52-43 as Alex Briones (of Ishpeming) ended the night with 18 points, but only on 5/20 shooting as Tyler Jandron caused him a lot of troubles defensively.  Eric Lori picked up right where the last game ended between the two and finished with a game-high 22 points alongside Tyler Jandron’s 21.  Negaunee improved to 8-0 in the MPC, but more importantly, are now two games (and a tie-breaker) ahead of the Hematites for out-right first place in the conference!

This week features two games of vastly different proportions.  One, a potential trap game that the Miners need to avoid falling into at all costs, and another that could possibly be the best game of the season:

  • Tuesday, 2/11 Negaunee vs. Gladstone Braves — WILL NOT BE BROADCASTED
  • Thursday, 2/12 Negaunee @ Marquette Redmen — Pregame at 6:50 followed by a 7:20 tip.

Two huge games to end the week for Miner nation.  A win at Marquette (The senior’s last game against our rival) would give the Miner boys a burst of energy headed towards the playoffs.  For the girls, a win at home against Westwood would tie them for first place in the MPC and give them a chance to win, or at least tie, for the MPC regular season title.  Now, I harp on this quite often whilst I’m on air, and will continue to do so until I think it’s being fulfilled:

GET OFF OF YOUR BUTTS AND GO TO THESE GAMES TO SUPPORT YOUR BOYS & GIRLS IN MAIZE & BLUE!  NEGAUNEE HAS HAD THE BEST FANS AROUND AND NEEDS TO RISE AGAIN.

So I say again:  GO MINERS!
