Should You Work Out When You’re Sick?
Practice proper gym etiquette when you’re sick – Don’t spread your germs around
Marquette, Michigan – January 29, 2014 – When you’re sick, the last thing you may want to do is get up and go to the gym. If you’ve been making steady progress with your workouts though, it might be difficult to “wimp out” and skip a workout.
Stay Home or Tough it Out – Well, it depends. The Mayo Clinic and WebMD both say your course of action depends on how sick you are and what you have. If you have symptoms above the neck (like a head cold) you’re probably okay to go workout. Symptoms below the neck (coughing, body aches and fatigue) mean you should probably just stay home.
Last week I missed my Wednesday workout because I was sick. I listened to my body and stayed away from the gym that day. I stayed home and took care of myself, and although I was a little tired, I made it back to the gym again on Friday.

Gym Etiquette – People go to the gym to get healthier, not to get sick. If you’re visibly ill, especially if you have something contagious, you should stay out of the gym. Wiping down the equipment after you use it is nice, but it really doesn’t matter much if you’re blowing your germs all over the place when you sneeze.
Although Synergy Fitness in Marquette doesn’t have an actual policy about working out when you’re sick, Manager Patty Martin said the decision to stay out of the gym when you’re sick is really about common sense and good etiquette.
The staff at Synergy Fitness disinfects the entire gym daily, but the best thing you can do to help them keep the gym germ-free is to stay home when you aren’t feeling well.
Patty also mentioned that working out when you’re sick can make you feel worse. If your body is already tired from trying to get well and you try to push your way through your regular routine, you could wind up making your cold worse or even prolong it.
The Verdict – Do yourself (and everyone else at the gym) a favor, stay home when you’re sick. Rest, drink plenty of water and just take care of yourself before you decide to push it. When you DO come back, take it easy at first and make sure your body is ready before diving into a strenuous workout.
