Verb: Stridulate (STRIJ-uh-layt)

Definition: To make a shrill creaking noise by rubbing together special bodily structures — used especially of male insects (as crickets or grasshoppers)

Sample sentence: As the darkness fell, the crickets began to stridulate and the rest of the insects joined in the chorus of the night.
