Health Tip – Sept. 9 – Baby Talk

A baby’s physical characteristics and behavior aren’t always reliable indicators of what the future may hold. But a recent Canadian study says you should pay attention to at least one mannerism: the way your baby laughs.

As reported in the Journal of Child Language, researchers in Montreal made tapes of mothers playing peek-a-boo with their infants. The tapes were made at three-month intervals with infants between the ages of 6 months and 2 years.

While some of the babies’ laughing sounds didn’t mean much, others showed a clear attempt to communicate, months before any of them could say a single word. Some of these sounds were even accompanied by hand gestures that helped express ideas.

And, the research found, the earlier the infants started to make these types of sounds, the sooner they learned to speak.
